A Treasure House of London
Spencer House was not just a family home and a venue for entertaining; it was also a private art gallery where the Spencers could show off some of the most prized objects from their collection. Today, Spencer House continues this tradition, containing an impressive assembly of paintings, furniture and other decorative objects carefully chosen to reflect the tastes of Lord and Lady Spencer and their contemporaries in the second half of the eighteenth century. Among the pieces on display are several objects original to the house, commissioned by the Spencers to decorate their new London home.
The collection has been greatly enhanced through many generous loans from both private lenders and national museums including the Victoria & Albert Museum, Tate, Royal Collection Trust and Leeds Museums and Galleries.

Conditionally Exempt Objects
Spencer House has a number of objects on loan which are considered to be of national importance and exempt from capital taxation, provided that some public access is granted to them. The display at Spencer House includes a rolling programme of temporary loans of objects that fall into this category.
